Patterns Are Everywhere Once you know what a pattern is — a repeating unit that shows up again and again in a predictable way — you start seeing them in everything. Not just in programming. In the world around you, in nature, in the things people make. Patterns are everywhere. Your Daily Routine What does your typical weekday morning look like? Wake up Brush teeth Eat breakfast Pack bag Go to school Does it change much day to day? Probably not. The sequence is almost exactly the same every weekday. This is a pattern. The repeating unit is your morning routine, and it repeats Monday through Friday, week after week. A programmer would not write out your morning routine 260 times (5 days × 52 weeks). They would describe it once and say: repeat every weekday. Your Weekly Schedule Your week has a pattern too. The same structure, 52 times a year. A pattern. Music Listen to your favourite song. Notice how many times the chorus comes back. A typical three-and-a-half-minute song might look like: > Verse 1 → Chorus → Verse 2 → Chorus → Bridge → Chorus → Chorus The chorus is the repeating unit. The songwriter wrote it once. It is used everywhere it appears. In music notation, instead of writing the chorus out four times, the score simply says "D.C." (Da Capo — "from the beginning") or marks it with repeat signs. The pattern is named, written once, and referenced wherever it repeats. Nature's Patterns Nature is full of patterns: Day and night: Light → Dark → Light → Dark. Every 24 hours. Seasons: Spring → Summer → Autumn → Winter. Every year. Tides: High tide → Low tide → High tide. Every 12 hours. Heartbeat: Beat → Pause → Beat → Pause. Thousands of times per day. None of these needed to be "programmed" by a human — they are patterns built into the physical world. But they perfectly illustrate what a pattern is: a repeating unit, cycling reliably. Did you know? Honeycomb is built from six-sided cells. Hexagons fit together with no gaps at all, so bees store the most honey for the least wax. The same six-sided shape turns up in snowflakes and in the stone columns of the Giant's Causeway — nature keeps reusing the patterns that work. Patterns in the Apps You Use App designers use patterns all the time. Have you noticed that almost every app you use looks similar in some ways? There is a navigation bar at the bottom or top A back arrow on the left A settings icon, often a gear, in the corner Content fills the middle of the screen Items in a list all look the same This is called a design pattern . The repeating unit is the layout and behaviour of a type of screen. Use the same pattern for all screens and the app feels familiar, easy to learn. If every screen looked completely different and behaved differently, using the app would be confusing and exhausting. Patterns in design exist to make things predictable — just like patterns in programming. Patterns in Stories Stories follow patterns too. Almost every hero story ever told follows the same structure: 1. Normal life 2. Something disrupts the normal life (a challenge arrives) 3. The hero goes on a journey or faces the challenge 4. Things get harder before they get better 5. The hero succeeds and returns changed From fairy tales to blockbuster films to novels — this pattern repeats. Authors and filmmakers use it because it works. Because audiences recognise it (even without knowing they do) and find it satisfying. Recognising this pattern helps someone write a story, just as recognising a code pattern helps a programmer write a program. The Programmer's Eye The skill of a programmer is not just writing code. It is seeing structure — looking at a problem and asking: Is there a pattern here? Does something repeat? Can I describe the repeating unit? This skill transfers everywhere: A programmer reading a dataset looks for repeating structures A programmer designing a website applies the same layout pattern to all pages A programmer writing a game loop identifies the patterns that make levels work Pattern recognition is the thinking skill. You need three food packets, paper and a pen. 1. Take out three different packets or boxes — cereal, biscuits, rice, whatever you have — and line them up. 2. Hunt for the parts that appear on all three : the brand name, the picture, the weight, the ingredients list, the barcode. Write down where each part sits on the packet. 3.
